توضیح اجمالی:

Base oils are the essential raw materials in the formulation of lubricants, accounting for 70% to 90% of the final product. When blended with performance additives, base oils help create lubricants that minimize friction, reduce wear, improve energy efficiency, and extend machinery life.

What is Base Oil?

Base oil is a refined petroleum product or synthetic liquid that provides the viscosity, lubricity, and stability required in lubricants. Its refining process and quality directly determine how well a lubricant performs under heat, load, and long operating cycles.

API Classification of Base Oils

The American Petroleum Institute (API) classifies base oils into five main groups:

  1. Group I Base Oils
  • Produced by solvent refining.
  • Viscosity index: 80 – 120.
  • Higher sulfur and aromatic content.
  • Commercial grades:
    • SN150 → Light viscosity base oil, used in engine oils, hydraulic fluids, and transformer oils.
    • SN500 → Heavier viscosity base oil, used in gear oils, marine lubricants, and industrial greases.
  • Applications: Automotive, marine, and general industrial lubricants.

  1. Group II Base Oils
  • Produced through hydrocracking.
  • Clearer color, lower sulfur, improved oxidation stability.
  • Widely used in modern automotive lubricants and industrial applications.

  1. Group III Base Oils
  • Highly refined through hydrocracking and hydroisomerization.
  • Viscosity index: ≥120, ultra-low sulfur.
  • Often labeled as synthetic or semi-synthetic oils.
  • Used in high-performance automotive engines.

  1. Group IV Base Oils (PAO – Polyalphaolefins)
  • Fully synthetic base oils.
  • Excellent performance in extreme hot and cold conditions.
  • Common in aviation, aerospace, and advanced automotive applications.

  1. Group V Base Oils
  • All other base oils not included in Groups I–IV (e.g., esters, naphthenics).
  • Typically blended with other groups to enhance lubricity, solubility, or seal compatibility.

Industrial Applications of Base Oils

Base oils play a critical role in multiple industries:

  • Automotive: Engine oils, transmission fluids, and hydraulic oils.
  • Industrial: Turbine oils, compressor oils, gear lubricants.
  • Marine & Aviation: High-performance lubricants for engines and systems.
  • Metalworking: Cutting fluids, rust-preventive oils.
  • Greases: Thickened with soap to produce industrial greases.

Why SN150 and SN500 are the Most Demanded Grades

In global trade, SN150 and SN500 are the most widely used Group I base oil grades due to their balance of performance and cost-effectiveness:

  • SN150 → Light viscosity, excellent low-temperature flow, ideal for blending automotive and industrial lubricants.
  • SN500 → Higher viscosity, excellent film strength, preferred for gear oils, marine lubricants, and greases.

Their availability, versatility, and relatively lower price compared to synthetic base oils make them the backbone of the global lubricants market.
