توضیح اجمالی:

Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most widely used thermoplastic polymers, produced by the polymerization of styrene monomer (C8H8). It is a synthetic aromatic hydrocarbon that has been commercially manufactured since the mid-20th century. Known for its light weight, ease of processing, cost-effectiveness, and versatility, polystyrene is used across packaging, consumer goods, construction, electrical, and medical industries.

Category:
What is Polystyrene (PS)?
Depending on formulation and additives, polystyrene exists in different forms:
  • GPPS (General Purpose Polystyrene): Transparent, rigid, brittle, high gloss.
  • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene): Opaque, tougher, impact-resistant (modified with rubber).
  • EPS (Expanded Polystyrene): Lightweight foam used in insulation, cushioning and disposable packaging.
  • XPS (Extruded Polystyrene): Closed-cell foam with excellent thermal insulation, often used in building and construction.
This family of polymers remains essential in the global plastics industry, with Asia-Pacific as the largest production hub, followed by Europe and North America.
General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS)
  Definition
General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) is the standard, unmodified form of polystyrene. Produced via suspension polymerization, GPPS is valued for its glass-like clarity, high stiffness, easy processability, and glossy finish. Unlike HIPS, GPPS contains no rubber modifiers, which makes it more transparent but also more brittle.
Key Properties
  • Appearance: Clear, colorless, high-gloss surface.
  • Density: ~1.04 g/cm³.
  • Thermal performance: Glass transition ~100 °C; good dimensional stability under heat.
  • Mechanical: High rigidity, excellent dimensional accuracy, brittle under impact.
  • Processing: Easily processed by injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming.
  • Electrical: Good insulating properties.
  Commercial Grades & Trade Names
Global producers market GPPS under different trade names, including:
  • AmSty GPPS (AmSty, USA)
  • Styrolux / Styron GPPS (Trinseo, EU/US)
  • INEOS Styrolution GPPS (Global)
  • Chi Mei Polystyrene GPPS (Asia-Pacific)
Buyers typically specify melt flow index (MFI), clarity, food-contact compliance, and special additives like UV stabilizers or flame retardants depending on the end-use.
Applications
GPPS is the material of choice wherever clarity, gloss, and dimensional precision are required:
  • Food packaging: trays, disposable cutlery, clamshell containers.
  • Consumer goods: CD/DVD cases, cosmetic packaging, toys.
  • Displays & signage: point-of-sale units, transparent covers, thermoformed sheets.
  • Medical devices (non-critical): petri dishes, lab consumables.
  • Electrical & electronic: transparent housings, insulators.
Processing Notes
  • Methods: Injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming.
  • Advantages: High productivity, easy coloring, excellent surface finish.
  • Limitations: Low impact resistance, poor UV stability without additives, limited solvent resistance.
Packaging & Supply Commercial GPPS is delivered in:
  • 25 kg bags
  • 1,000 kg jumbo bags (FIBCs)
  • Bulk delivery (pneumatic tankers)
All grades are supplied with TDS (Technical Data Sheet), COA (Certificate of Analysis), and MSDS (Safety Data Sheet). Food-contact and medical-use grades meet FDA and EU regulations for safety.
Sustainability
GPPS is recyclable under plastic recycling code 6. Although recycling rates differ by region, many processors now incorporate post-consumer recycled polystyrene (PCR-PS) into packaging and non-food products, supporting the shift toward circular plastics economy.
